Mourning Becomes Electra

Spring 2023

Mourning Becomes Electra was The Acting Ensemble’s second production, adapted from the trilogy by Eugene O’Neill, one of the greatest playwrights of the 20th century.

The three plays: The Homecoming, The Hunted and The Haunted, based on Aeschylus’ Oresteia, tell the story of The Mannons, a wealthy ship-building family torn apart by infidelity, jealousy and revenge.

Eugene O’Neill, a playwright a head of his time, makes a striking comment on the hypocrisy and corrupt foundations of American society, built on slavery.  Like Greek Tragedy created to cleanse society of political and moral corruptness, Mourning Becomes Electra questions a society built from slavery and suggests that only by admitting and facing the evils of the past, can we move into a bright future.

A play of magnitude told with such honesty and simplicity.”

“Such honest and truthful performances.”

“I was captivated from beginning to end.  Two and a half hours flew by.”

“Fascinating and interesting play.”

“A great work of literature explored with honesty and truth.”

“We cannot wait for The Acting Ensemble’s next production.  They never fail to take us on an emotional journey from beginning to end, and leave us with asking questions and wanting more.”
