Uncle Vanya - Scenes From Country Life

Uncle Vanya – Scenes From Country Life, is considered one of Anton Chekhov’s most revered plays. This is a story of a family estate, which under the supervision of Uncle Vanya and his niece Sonya, provide financially for the family both at home and in Moscow. Crisis comes to a head when Serebryakov, Vanya’s brother-in-law who he has supported since the death of his beloved sister Vera, and his beautiful young wife Yelena decide to come and live in the country estate when Serebryakov’s health and career are failing him.

This is a powerful, sensitive play and through its acute structure of concealment and disclosure, allows us to investigate its characters and to see their deepest secrets. It is a work of genius as it makes us laugh and cry and question and reflect on a society which very soon will no longer exist in Russia. A play about a gradual loss of illusions with modern themes of climate change, deforestation – a world in which injustice is rewarded and celebrated, and the good and honourable and honest cast aside.

Chekhov was a playwright way ahead of his time, recording life exactly as it was to him with mocking tenderness, he reflects human stupidity and the difficulty of existence. Despair pervades Uncle Vanya, but compassion illuminates it. Chekhov: the true artist always searching for truth and beauty.

The Cast

Baptiste Gendre as Vanya

Baptiste is a French-German trilingual actor with a background in medical device engineering. Over the past four years, he has trained in various acting techniques, balancing creative freedom with industry insight. It's his 2nd year with the Ensemble.

Ivy Hsu as Sonya

Ivy originates from Taiwan. She’s an actress model and designer. She has been with the Ensemble Company for six years and is an honored member.

Alesia S. Mikaelson as Sonya

Alesia is a Romanian actress based in Paris. Before relocating to France, she gained experience as a director and actor in theatre; her current focus lies in performing and writing. This is her first year in the ensemble.

Oscar Ceville as Astrov

Oscar, a SAG-AFTRA member with 20+ years of theatre, film, and TV experience, joins The Acting Ensemble for his third year. He looks forward to continuing refining his craft and deepening his character development work as he steps into the role of Astrov in Uncle Vanya.

Thomas Henry Comerford as Astrov

Tom trained at Playhouse Paris for two years before joining The Acting Ensemble in January 2025. He's fully bilingual in English and French.

Patricia Deery as Serebryakov

Trish is happy to have returned for her third year with the Acting Ensemble. The collaborative and supportive atmosphere of this dynamic acting community makes the creative process fun and inspiring. She's already looking forward to year four!

Mertol Ozaltan as Serebryakov

Mertol Ozaltan is a Turkish-Canadian working in international affairs in Paris. This is his second year in the Ensemble. Having a passion for acting his whole life, Mertol strives to captivate audiences through characters with spell and presence.

Raluca Nechita as Yelena

Originally from Romania, Raluca has been calling Paris her home for the past 12 years. She has performed both on stage and in front of the camera in English, French and Romanian. This is her second year with the Ensemble.

Joséphine Demay as Yelena

Joséphine is a professional pluridisciplinary (theatre, cinema, voice acting) bilingual actress. She was trained and has performed in both London and Paris. This is her second year with the Acting Ensemble.

Marie Gowran as Marina

Marie is an Irish actress living in Paris. She has spent the previous 2 years training in multiple techniques and modalities of acting. This is her first year with the Acting Ensemble.

Jérôme Wukovits as Telegin

Both French and British, Jérôme was born and raised in France. He's been working as a singer for 15 years now and has done concerts and tours in several countries. He's now chasing roles to be on stage as a comedian and a singer, since he's a huge musical theater lover. This is his first year with the Ensemble.

Ayesha Small as Maria Vasilyevna

Ayesha originates from Canada. She has been studying with the Acting Ensemble for 5 years and is pleased to be a part of this production.

Katie Rennuit as Maria Vasilyevna

This is Katie's second year in The Ensemble. She is a British writer/performer originally trained in the Meisner technique with experience as an ensemble stage actor as well as solo performer in both Paris and London.

Nishant Nair as Watchman

Originally from India, Nishant has been living in France for 3 years and works as a biophysics researcher in academia. He is also a Dancer - Choreographer - Youtuber with acting experience in several indie short films. This is his first year with the Ensemble Company.

Bhawna Periwal as Workman

Bhawna is from India and has been living in Paris for six years, where she works in finance. Outside of work, she has been a salsa dancer for ten years, with acting as her passion for the past five years. She is bilingual and this is her first year with the Acting Ensemble.
